Who do I call to report a pothole or other road defect?
The Highway Department tries to stay on top of conditions on all town roads. However Sheffield has over 80 miles of town roads. If you notice a pothole or other road problem, please call the Highway Dept at (413) 229-7030. Please leave a message on the answering machine, as the Highway crew is usually out of the garage. In the alternative, you can report the problem by email at sheffieldmass@bcn.net.
A tree has fallen down. Who do I call?
Trees on public property are removed when they are a danger to people or property. Call the Highway Department (413) 229-7030 to notify them of a fallen or dangerous tree. If a tree has fallen on utility wires, please also report it to National Grid at (800) 465-1212. If the tree has taken down utility lines, please call the Sheffield Police Department at (413) 229-8522 to report.
Do I need a permit to put a new driveway in off of a Town Road?
Yes. Sheffield By-Laws require a permit from the Board of Selectmen for all new curb cuts and driveways off of Town Roads. A Curb Cut permit application can be downloaded from this website or picked up at Town Hall. The application will be reviewed by the Highway Superintendent and Police Chief prior to the Board of Selectmen acting upon it.
Does the town provide winter sand for residents to use on their driveways?
Yes. A small quantity of Winter Sand can be picked up next to the Town Hall. This sand is supplied for Sheffield Residents only for use on their own driveways. NO SNOWPLOW CONTRACTORS. Sand must be shoveled into 5-gallon or smaller pails and there is a limit of two pails. Please do not shovel sand directly into the back of a truck.
