Snowplowing of Town Roads
The Sheffield Highway Department is responsible for snow and ice control on all town roads (Route 7 and Route 41 is maintained by the Mass. Highway Department).

Residents should comply with the following guidelines relating to public ways:

1. Do not rake leaves or other debris onto public ways.
2. Uncover the storm drain in front of your house if covered over with leaves, snow or other debris.
3. Do not plow or throw snow from private property onto the street or sidewalk.
4. Do not pump water from sump pump onto a public street or sidewalk.
5. Do not plow in or block sidewalks with snow or a motor vehicle.
6. Do not park a vehicle overnight on any public way, especially during snow season, November 1st to April 1st.
7. Residents are responsible for clearing leaves, debris and snow from culverts under their driveway.

Mail Box Policy
Another area of concern to residents is mailboxes. We do not "deliberately" knock over or damage mailboxes. Remember, anything installed within the Town's right-of-way (i.e., fence, mailbox, etc.) is placed there at the owner's risk. Hence, residents are encouraged to place mailboxes at the maximum allowable distance from the pavement. Please be aware that the Town of Sheffield does not reimburse for mailboxes damaged during snow plowing operations.
Mailboxes should be inspected regularly to insure that they are secured properly and that wood posts are not rotted out.

Residents can help:
Residents can assist the Highway Department during a snow storm by heeding these suggestions:
  • Observe all winter parking bans.
  • Reduce your speed and drive cautiously.
  • Remain off the streets during snow storms unless absolutely necessary.
  • Do not allow children to make "snow forts" at the edge of roads.
  • Do not plow, blow or throw snow back into the road.
  • Before final clean-up of your driveway check the road. If it does not appear to be widened out, a plow will most likely be  returning to plow again, and may push snow back into the entrance of your driveway.  Doing this might keep you from clearing your driveway more than once.
  • During plowing operations some lawn areas located within the town’s right of way will inadvertently be damaged. To help keep this from occurring, we recommend that you maintain reflectors at the edge of your lawn as a guide for our plow operators.
Winter Sand for Residents
A small quantity of Winter Sand can be picked up next to the Town Hall. This sand is supplied for Sheffield Residents only for use on their own driveways.  NO SNOWPLOW CONTRACTORS.  Sand must be shoveled into 5-gallon or smaller pails and there is a limit of two pails.  Please do not shovel sand directly into the back of a truck.
